From a single moment to a movement: Go beyond the hour!
It started with a celebration in Sydney, Australia over 10 years ago. And now, the Earth Hour celebration sparks conversations and inspire over a million people to take steps in protecting the environment, one hour at a time. Truly, it takes a single step to a long journey.
But does it have to stop there? We think not. Here are just some ways on how you can make the Earth Hour habit, a daily habit!
Kill the vampire!
Or “vampire power” that is. It is the energy used by appliances when they are turned off but still plugged into the power outlet. So before you leave your home or office desk, make sure to not just shut your appliances off, but to completely unplug it.
Watch your water
As our climates change unexpectedly – rainy days on summer, and dry heat on a supposedly cold season occur. These are just some of the ways on how you can save water:
- Turn off the water while brushing teeth or take a shorter shower.
- Fix any drips. It is better to invest well now than to spend amounts later on repairing it. It can even save you liters of water a day.
- Ever heard of “grey water?”. It is the water draining from your house’s sinks, bathtubs, or laundry machines, which can be used to water plants (as opposed to “black water” from toilets, which require treatment). The easiest you can recycle grey water is from the washing machine, which can save you up to thousands of gallons per year. If you use grey water for your landscape, be sure to use eco-friendly or plant-based soaps and cleaners so you don’t douse your plants with chemicals.
Share a ride, win a friend!
With the ever-growing problem with the metro traffic, it’s no surprise that we are contributing to air pollution and carbon emissions. But while we have the chance to make things right, we can share the lane with fellow car owners and have fewer cars on the roads. And who knows, you might just meet new friends!
Shop ‘til you drop, eco bags ain’t just a prop!
You don’t notice this but, you’ll use a plastic bag from the store until you get home. And sometimes, it’s thrown away half-through your travel. Short use, but it lives forever, 500 to 1000 years to be more specific, and many of them aren’t disposed of properly. Unfortunately, a lot of them end up in the streets, and worse, in our oceans.
So bring a reusable bag instead! There’s an endless array of choices for these environment-friendly containers. The next time you shop, refuse the plastic bag and instead put your new merchandise in your reusable bag!
And this applies not just for bags. Getting your daily dose of caffeine? Tell the barista to put it in your tumbler, and use metal or bamboo straws while you’re at it. And if you prefer your coffee with a slice of cake, make sure you bring your own reusable utensils. Ditch those plastic spoons and forks!
Never stop learning
Thanks to the growing community of mindful citizens, we have tons of information about caring for the environment within a finger’s reach. With just a few taps and clicks, you can have access to lectures, conferences, and more.
And better yet, join the community and meet other people with the same goal – protecting our environment. Join the Earth Hour at SM on March 30, 2019, 8:30 PM in participating SM Supermalls nationwide. More than just switching off the lights for an hour, we send a message to the world on how we can achieve a more sustainable planet for everyone.
